How to choose a joint supplement: glucosamine, chondroitin and herbal formulas compared
Walk into any pharmacy and there is a whole shelf of joint supplements: glucosamine, chondroitin, collagen, MSM, herbal blends, from a few ringgit to a few hundred. How do you choose?
Common joint ingredients compared
- Glucosamine: one of the building blocks of cartilage and the most common joint ingredient. Research results are mixed: some people find it helps, others notice little. Much glucosamine comes from shellfish, so take care if you have a seafood allergy.
- Chondroitin: another cartilage component, often paired with glucosamine to help cartilage stay hydrated and springy.
- Collagen (type II): the main collagen in cartilage, used in some products to support joint structure.
- MSM: a sulphur compound often added to help ease joint discomfort.
- Herbal formulas: such as turmeric, boswellia, cat’s claw or Scutellaria root, traditionally used to ease joint discomfort and support flexibility.
Each ingredient works in a slightly different way, and some formulas combine several to look after cartilage, muscles and nerves together.
5 things to check
- Clear ingredients and amounts: does the label list each ingredient, rather than just "proprietary blend"?
- Certification: KKM / NPRA registration, HALAL certification and third-party lab reports such as SGS.
- Whether it suits you: if you have a seafood allergy, are vegetarian or have diabetes, check where the ingredients come from.
- How easy it is to take: how many times and how many a day, and whether you can keep it up. Joint care usually takes 2–3 months to feel steadier.
- After-sales support: will the seller explain how to take it, follow up, and be there if you have questions?
Ask a doctor first if
You take blood thinners (such as warfarin), have diabetes, liver or kidney disease, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have surgery coming up. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any joint supplement.
Remember: a supplement is only part of it
Even the best supplement works best alongside a healthy weight, stronger thigh and core muscles, and fewer movements that strain your joints. If joint pain keeps getting worse, or the joint is red and swollen, see a doctor.
